On a pu faire une dernière virée avant de repartir vers la Finlande, nous faisant partir plus tard mais nous évitant ainsi la file d’attente à la frontière devant tous les autres bus de touristes.

We were able to make a last trip before leaving towards Finland, so we left later but then we avoid the wait on the border before all other tourists’ buses.

Tout d’abord une petite photo du petit-déjeuner qu’on avait chaque matin. Au menu, pain, viennoiseries, confitures, muesli, yaourt, porridge, jus d’orange, jus de pomme, thé, café, concombres, charcuterie, crudités, fruits, chou-fleur, pancakes, oeufs, viande… Bref, on mangeait ce qu’on pouvait car le seul repas suivant consisterait en un ou deux petits sandwiches, que l’on faisait d’ailleurs honteusement avec la nourriture du matin, sous les yeux peu concernés des travailleurs de l’hôtel, alors c’est bon (on vous avez dit que cette fille sombrerait dans la délinquance dirait Sylvie).

First of all a small photo of the breakfast which we had every morning. In the menu, bread, croissants and similar products, jams, muesli, yoghurt, porridge, orange juice, apple juice, teas, coffee, cucumbers, delicatessen, raw vegetables, fruts, cauliflower, pancakes, eggs, meat… In brief, we ate what we could because the only following meal would consist of one or two small sandwiches, that we made moreover shamefully with the morning food, under eyes little concerned by the workers of the hotel, then it is good (we said to you that this girl would sink into the crime would say Sylvie).

On a dormi dans un hôtel 4 étoiles. En sachant ça je me suis imaginé la suite royale comme dans le film “Hors de Prix”. Zut c’était pas ça ! Les chambres étaient normales, même pas le petit déjeuner au lit, par contre le hall était aussi grand que ma maison (bon prenez pas mon râlage au sérieux, c’est de l’humour). Le lendemain nous sommes partis pour le tour en bus avec un guide, qui nous a donc expliqué en long et en travers l’histoire de la ville et de ses bâtiments. Dire que je me souviens de tout serait une grande hyperbole, mais avec l’aide de Wikipédia ma mémoire devrait se souvenir de quelques trucs !

We slept in a 4-stars hotel. By knowing that I imagined the royal suite as in the  movie “Priceless”. Damn it was not that! Rooms were normal, not even breakfast in the bed, but the hall was as big as my house (well do not take this bad mood seriously, it is of the humor). The next day we left for the bus tour with a guide, who thus explained us  the history of the city and its buildings. To say that I remember everything would be a big hyperbola, but with help  of Wikipédia my memory should remember some things !

Saint Pétersbourg, c’est la ville que je souhaitais visiter quand j’ai su que j’irai en Finlande. C’est une des villes que l’on peut citer lorsque l’on pense à la Russie, avec Moscou. J’en avais entendu des louanges sur cette ville. La frontière russe est à 70 km seulement de Joensuu, et Saint Pétersbourg à 301 km ! Il aurait été dommage de ne pas en profiter.

Saint Petersburg, is the city I wished to visit when I knew that I would go to Finland. It is one of cthe ities which we can quote when we think about Russia, with Moscow. I had heard a lot of praises on this city. The Russian border is 70 km only from Joensuu, and Saint Petersburg only 301 km! It would have been a pity not to take advantage of that.

C’était mon premier passage de frontière avec vérification de papiers, passeport et visa. Ça a été assez vite, nous étions le seul bus à attendre pour passer, par contre j’imagine la longueur d’attente quand il y en a 20 ! Petite pause au bureau d’échange de monnaie pour obtenir des roubles (le taux étant plus avantageux à la frontière que dans les bureaux d’échange de la ville), arrêt au magasin “duty free” (produits sans taxes), et c’est parti pour la deuxième vérification du côté russe. Une dame avec un chapeau… très russe quoi passe dans le bus et regarde tous les passeports soigneusement ouverts à son adresse, puis rebelotte, on descend, on fait la queue le temps que tout le monde ait son passeport vérifié.

It was my first passage of border with check of papers, passport and visa. That was quite fast, we were the only bus waiting to pass, but I imagine the duration of wait when there are 20! Small break to the  currency exchange office to obtain roubles (the rate being more advantageous on the border than in the currency exchange offices of the city), a stop in the store “duty-free” (products without taxes), and let’s go for the second check at the Russian side. A lady with a very Russian hat passes in the bus and looks at all the passports carefully opened to her address, then same thing again, we come down, we queue up the time when everybody has his/her verified passport.
